Sensory nervous system

The parts of the nervous system that detect sensory stimuli and transmit information about them to the central nervous system.

Sensory transduction: The conversion of sensory stimuli into electrical signals in sensory receptor cells or neurons. It turns stimulus energy into the neural signals carried by sensory pathways.
Somatosensation: The perception of touch, pressure, pain, temperature, and body position. It covers sensory information from the body’s skin, muscles, and joints.
Sensory processing: The neural organization and interpretation of information arriving from sensory systems. It explains how transmitted signals become useful representations of stimuli.
Motor nervous system: The parts of the nervous system that control muscles and glands through outgoing signals. It carries commands outward, whereas sensory pathways carry information toward the central nervous system.
Sensory receptor: A specialized cell or nerve ending that detects a particular kind of stimulus. Different receptor types begin the system’s responses to distinct stimuli.
Proprioception: The sense of the position and movement of body parts. Its receptors report body position without relying on vision.
Sensory feedback: Sensory information used to monitor and adjust an ongoing action or bodily process. Signals from receptors help the nervous system correct movement as it unfolds.
Autonomic nervous system: The nervous system divisions that regulate involuntary functions of internal organs, glands, and blood vessels. Its main role is regulating internal activity rather than conveying external sensory input.
Afferent nerve fiber: A nerve fiber that carries information toward the central nervous system. These fibers convey signals from sensory receptors toward the spinal cord or brain.
Nociception: The neural encoding of actual or potential tissue-damaging stimuli. It is the sensory process that can generate pain signals.
