Seoul Metropolitan Subway

A rapid-transit and commuter-rail network serving Seoul and surrounding parts of South Korea, operated by multiple public and private railway companies.

Seoul Subway Line 1: A Seoul-area railway corridor linking central Seoul with destinations in Gyeonggi Province and beyond. Its through-running services helped establish the network’s defining mix of subway and regional rail.
Through-running: The operation of trains across connected railway lines without requiring passengers to change trains. Suburban trains cross operator and line boundaries, extending journeys into central Seoul.
Seoul Subway Line 1 opening: The 1974 inauguration of Seoul’s first subway service, connecting Seoul Station and Cheongnyangni. The opening marked the start of the modern metropolitan subway network.
Commuting: Regular travel between a person’s home and workplace or school. The network carries large flows between residential suburbs and employment centers.
Seoul Subway Line 2: A circular metro line with branches serving major districts of Seoul. Its loop connects central business districts, universities, and transfer hubs across the city.
Interchange station: A railway station where passengers can transfer between lines or services. Large transfer stations connect otherwise separate corridors and operators.
Seoul Subway Line 2 opening: The staged opening of Seoul Subway Line 2 between 1980 and 1984. Its completion created a major orbital route through the expanding city.
Gimpo International Airport: An airport serving domestic and some international flights in western Seoul. Subway and rail connections make it accessible from across the metropolitan area.
Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 9: A Seoul metro line running east–west through southern Seoul, including express services on much of its route. Its express trains show how one corridor can offer distinct stopping patterns.
T-money: A rechargeable contactless payment system used for public transport and other purchases in South Korea. It supports convenient transfers across subway, bus, and participating rail services.
