Separate spheres

Separate spheres is a social ideology that assigns men public and economic roles while assigning women domestic and moral roles. It presents these gendered domains as distinct and complementary.

Industrial Revolution: A period of major mechanization and economic transformation that began in Britain in the eighteenth century. The separation of workplaces from households helped make gendered public and domestic roles seem natural.
Gender essentialism: The belief that women and men possess distinct, fixed traits because of their sex. Claims of innate feminine virtue and masculine rationality made separate roles appear inevitable.
Coverture: A common-law doctrine that subsumed a married woman’s legal identity under her husband’s in many contexts. Legal dependence reinforced the ideal of women’s household subordination and men’s public authority.
Gender equality: The condition in which people of different genders have equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities. It rejects assigning social roles and opportunities by gender.
Victorian era: The period of Queen Victoria’s reign in Britain, from 1837 to 1901. Victorian Britain became a prominent setting for ideals of domestic femininity and male public authority.
Domesticity: An ideal that centers family life, home-making, and private household responsibilities. It defined the household as women’s proper domain and assigned it social value.
Women’s suffrage: The movement to secure women’s legal right to vote. Suffragists contested the claim that women’s moral influence should remain confined to the home.
Gender performativity: The idea that gender is produced through repeated social acts rather than simply expressing an inner essence. It challenges the assumption that separate roles follow naturally from fixed male and female traits.
Cult of Domesticity: A nineteenth-century ideal that cast women’s domestic, religious, and moral influence as central to family life. It gave the domestic sphere a specific moral language and a model of ideal womanhood.
Wage labor: Work performed in exchange for payment, usually under an employer’s direction. Its association with public employment made men’s paid work appear separate from women’s unpaid household labor.
