Septimius Severus

Septimius Severus was Roman emperor from 193 to 211 CE and founder of the Severan dynasty. His reign strengthened the army’s political role and extended Roman power in the east.

Year of the Five Emperors: The Roman civil war of 193 CE, in which five claimants held or sought imperial power. Severus emerged as emperor from the succession crisis that began after Pertinax’s murder.
Roman army: The armed forces of ancient Rome, organized into legions and auxiliary units. Severus relied on soldiers for accession and made their interests central to imperial government.
