Septum (anatomy)

A wall or partition that divides a bodily cavity or structure into compartments. Septa may be made of tissue, cartilage, or bone.

Anatomical cavity: A hollow or partly enclosed space within the body that contains organs, tissues, or fluid. A septum partitions a cavity into smaller spaces.
Interatrial septum: The wall separating the right and left atria of the heart. It separates the heart’s two upper chambers.
Septation: The division of a developing structure into separate compartments by formation of partitions. This developmental process creates several internal anatomical septa.
Deviated septum: A nasal septum displaced from the midline, sometimes narrowing one nasal passage. This common septal variation can obstruct airflow through the nose.
Mucosal fold: A ridge of mucous membrane projecting into a body cavity or onto a tissue surface. Unlike a septum, a fold projects from a surface rather than dividing a space into compartments.
Connective tissue: A tissue type that supports, connects, or separates other tissues and organs. Many septa are formed partly or wholly from connective tissue.
Interventricular septum: The muscular wall separating the right and left ventricles of the heart. It divides the heart’s two lower chambers and contributes to their contraction.
Endocardial cushion: A region of embryonic heart tissue that contributes to the formation of valves and septa. Its growth and fusion help divide the developing heart.
Septoplasty: Surgery that corrects a deviated nasal septum by repositioning or reshaping its components. It treats nasal obstruction caused by septal displacement.
Membrane: A thin sheet of tissue that covers a surface, lines a cavity, or separates structures. A membrane may form a septum, but many membranes do not partition a cavity.
