Serbian Empire

The Serbian Empire was a medieval state that expanded across much of the Balkans under Stefan Dušan, who proclaimed himself emperor in 1346.

Stefan Dušan: Stefan Dušan was a Serbian ruler who reigned from 1331 to 1355 and proclaimed himself emperor in 1346. His conquests and imperial claim brought the Serbian state to its greatest extent.
Serbian Despotate: The Serbian Despotate was a late medieval Serbian state that survived the empire’s collapse and fell to the Ottomans in 1459. It emerged from the fragmented Serbian lands after imperial authority broke down.

Stefan Uroš III Dečanski: Stefan Uroš III Dečanski was a Serbian king who ruled from 1321 to 1331. His reign immediately preceded Dušan’s expansion and established the dynasty’s position.
Byzantine Empire: The Byzantine Empire was the medieval continuation of the Roman Empire, centered on Constantinople. Dušan adopted Byzantine imperial titles and institutions while challenging Byzantine rule in the Balkans.

Battle of Velbazhd: The Battle of Velbazhd was a 1330 Serbian victory over Bulgaria near present-day Kyustendil. The victory weakened Bulgaria and helped prepare the way for Serbian regional dominance.
Feudalism: Feudalism describes systems of political and economic relationships based on landholding, service, and hierarchical lordship. Local nobles exercised power through layered obligations that limited central control.
