Knowra Serengeti Serengeti The Serengeti is an East African ecosystem of grasslands, woodlands, and open savanna spanning northern Tanzania and southwestern Kenya. It is known for seasonal migrations of large herbivores and the predators that follow them.
Great Migration : The annual movement of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles through the Serengeti ecosystem in search of pasture and water. Its route and timing reveal how rainfall and fresh grass organize movement across the ecosystem.
Savanna : A tropical or subtropical ecosystem with grasses, scattered trees, and seasonal rainfall. Savanna is the characteristic open habitat across much of the Serengeti.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area : A protected area in northern Tanzania adjoining Serengeti National Park and including the Ngorongoro Crater. Its boundary meets the Serengeti, linking wildlife habitat with a distinct conservation and settlement model.
Wildlife conservation : The protection and management of wild species and the habitats on which they depend. Conservation aims to maintain the Serengeti’s wildlife populations and ecological processes.
Wildebeest : Large African antelopes that form immense herds and undertake long seasonal migrations. Their grazing and movement drive much of the Serengeti’s annual migration.
Acacia : A genus of trees and shrubs common in African savannas and dry woodlands. Acacias help define the wooded patches and browsing habitat within the grassland mosaic.
Serengeti National Park : A protected area in northern Tanzania established in 1951 within the larger Serengeti ecosystem. The park is the ecosystem’s best-known protected core, but does not encompass the whole system.
Serengeti human-wildlife conflict : Conflicts arising when wildlife and human activities compete for space, livestock, crops, or safety in the Serengeti region. Wildlife movement beyond protected areas can bring costs and risks to nearby communities.
Mara River : A river flowing through the Serengeti–Mara region of Tanzania and Kenya. Crossings during the migration concentrate herds and predators at a major geographic obstacle.
Zebra : Striped African equids that graze on grasses and occur in large herds. Zebras migrate alongside wildebeest, often feeding on different grass growth.
