Sergei Parajanov

Sergei Parajanov (1924–1990) was a Soviet Armenian film director and screenwriter whose richly composed, unconventional films include Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors and The Color of Pomegranates.

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors: A 1965 film by Sergei Parajanov, adapted from Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky’s novella and set among Hutsul communities in the Carpathians. Its kinetic camera and Hutsul traditions established Parajanov’s international reputation.
Tableau vivant: A staged scene arranged to resemble a still image or painting. Parajanov often builds scenes as composed images rather than continuous dramatic action.
