Sergey Mikhalkov

Sergey Mikhalkov (1913–2009) was a Soviet and Russian poet, playwright, and children’s author. He wrote the lyrics for the Soviet national anthem and its Russian successor.

Uncle Styopa: A comic verse character created by Sergey Mikhalkov, a tall, kind policeman whose adventures became a children’s book series. This recurring character became one of Mikhalkov’s best-known creations for children.
Soviet Union: A socialist federation of republics that existed from 1922 to 1991, led by the Communist Party. Mikhalkov’s literary career began and flourished within this state.
Gabriel El-Registan: A Soviet-Armenian poet and journalist who co-wrote the original Soviet national anthem lyrics with Sergey Mikhalkov. El-Registan shared authorship of the anthem text that established Mikhalkov’s national prominence.
De-Stalinization: The political campaign after Stalin’s death to repudiate aspects of his rule and reduce his influence in Soviet life. The campaign made the anthem’s Stalin-era lyrics unusable without rewriting.
