Serotonin receptor

A cell-surface receptor that binds serotonin and changes cellular activity. Its receptor families use distinct signaling mechanisms to shape communication in the brain and other tissues.

Serotonin: A neurotransmitter and signaling molecule involved in mood, sleep, appetite, and other functions. It is the ligand whose binding activates serotonin receptors.
5-HT1A receptor: A serotonin receptor subtype coupled primarily to Gi/o proteins. It often inhibits neuronal activity by reducing cyclic AMP and activating potassium currents.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor: A drug that inhibits serotonin reuptake through the serotonin transporter. These medicines raise extracellular serotonin, indirectly changing receptor stimulation.
Dopamine receptor: A receptor that binds dopamine and mediates its effects in neural and peripheral signaling. Dopamine receptors form a parallel neurotransmitter system with different ligands and functions.
G protein-coupled receptor: A membrane receptor that signals inside cells by activating heterotrimeric G proteins. Most serotonin receptor subtypes belong to this broad receptor family.
5-HT2A receptor: A serotonin receptor subtype coupled primarily to Gq/11 proteins. Its signaling can increase intracellular calcium and alter cortical neuronal activity.
Triptan: A class of migraine medicines that act as agonists at selected serotonin receptors. Their activity at 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors helps relieve migraine attacks.
Norepinephrine receptor: A receptor activated by norepinephrine, including adrenergic GPCR subtypes. Adrenergic receptors provide a useful comparison for serotonin’s GPCR signaling.
Ligand-gated ion channel: A membrane protein that opens an ion-conducting pore when a chemical ligand binds. The 5-HT3 receptor uses this mechanism rather than G-protein signaling.
5-HT3 receptor: A serotonin-gated ion channel permeable to cations. It produces rapid electrical responses unlike the metabotropic serotonin receptors.
