Serra do Mar

The Serra do Mar is a mountain range along Brazil’s southeastern Atlantic coast, extending through Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina. Its steep escarpments separate coastal lowlands from the inland plateau.

Brazilian Highlands: A broad plateau and upland region covering much of eastern and central Brazil. The Serra do Mar forms the steep southeastern edge of these uplands.
Orographic lift: The upward movement and cooling of air forced over elevated terrain. It helps produce heavy rainfall on the Serra do Mar’s seaward slopes.

Habitat fragmentation: The division of continuous habitat into smaller, isolated patches. Roads and settlement across the range can break up its forest cover.
