Sesshū Tōyō

Sesshū Tōyō was a 15th-century Japanese Zen Buddhist monk and painter whose forceful monochrome landscapes shaped the development of Japanese ink painting.

Haboku Sansui: A landscape attributed to Sesshū that uses bold, broken-ink strokes to evoke mountains, trees, and water. This late work displays his most radical use of abbreviated ink forms.
Ink wash painting: A painting technique that uses diluted ink to create tonal ranges and expressive brush marks. Sesshū made this medium the basis of his landscape practice.
