Knowra Seven Days Battles Seven Days Battles A series of battles fought near Richmond, Virginia, from June 25 to July 1, 1862, in which Robert E. Lee’s Confederate army drove George B. McClellan’s Union army away from the city.
Battle of Gaines' Mill : A June 27, 1862, battle in which Confederate forces broke through a Union position north of the Chickahominy River. Lee’s largest success during the Seven Days forced McClellan to abandon his supply base at White House Landing.
Peninsula Campaign : A 1862 Union military campaign that advanced toward Richmond through Virginia’s York and James River peninsula. The Seven Days were the decisive fighting that ended McClellan’s advance in this campaign.
Second Battle of Bull Run : An August 1862 Confederate victory over Union forces near Manassas, Virginia. After the Seven Days, Lee shifted his army north and won another major victory in the eastern theater.

Antietam Campaign : The 1862 Confederate invasion of Maryland and the Union campaign that culminated at Antietam. Lee’s success around Richmond helped free his army to carry the war north later that year.
Strategic victory : A military success that advances broader political or campaign objectives beyond an individual battle. Lee achieved the central strategic aim of protecting Richmond, even without destroying McClellan’s army.
