Seventeen Point Agreement

The 1951 agreement between the Central People’s Government of China and representatives of Tibet, establishing Chinese sovereignty while promising autonomy and preservation of Tibetan institutions.

Battle of Chamdo: A 1950 military campaign in eastern Tibet that brought the region under Chinese control. The campaign preceded negotiations and strengthened Beijing’s position in them.
Central People’s Government: The central government of the People’s Republic of China, established in 1949. It was the Chinese party to the agreement and assumed authority over Tibet.
1959 Tibetan uprising: A revolt against Chinese rule in Tibet that began in Lhasa in March 1959. The uprising followed escalating tensions over the autonomy and protections promised in 1951.
