Seventh Dynasty of Egypt

The Seventh Dynasty of Egypt is a traditionally numbered ruling house placed at the start of the First Intermediate Period. Its existence as a distinct dynasty is uncertain, and the ancient account describing it is widely treated as unreliable.

Manetho: An Egyptian priest and historian of the early Ptolemaic period who composed a history of Egypt in Greek. His lost history supplies the traditional account from which the dynasty’s numbering derives.
First Intermediate Period: A period of political fragmentation in Egypt between the Old and Middle Kingdoms, conventionally dated around 2181–2055 BCE. The Seventh Dynasty is traditionally placed at this period’s beginning.
Turin King List: A Ramesside papyrus listing Egyptian kings and reign lengths, now surviving in fragmentary condition. Its damaged passages complicate efforts to identify rulers assigned to the early First Intermediate Period.

Memphite succession hypothesis: The proposal that rulers traditionally divided among early dynasties formed a less sharply divided Memphite succession. It offers an alternative to accepting a distinct Seventh Dynasty as Manetho describes it.
Africanus: Sextus Julius Africanus was a Christian chronographer whose writings preserved a version of Manetho’s Egyptian king list. His version transmits the famous claim of seventy kings ruling in seventy days.
Eighth Dynasty of Egypt: A group of rulers traditionally assigned to the early First Intermediate Period, known chiefly from king lists and fragmentary evidence. It is the next numbered dynasty in the conventional sequence, though its boundaries remain uncertain.
