Severnaya Zemlya

Severnaya Zemlya is a Russian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, north of the Taymyr Peninsula. It comprises four major islands and numerous smaller islands.

Boris Vilkitsky: A Russian naval officer and hydrographer who led the 1913 Arctic expedition that sighted Severnaya Zemlya. His expedition brought the archipelago to Russian attention and mapped its southern coast.
October Revolution Island: The largest island of Severnaya Zemlya, divided by glaciers and crossed by Arctic mountain ranges. It anchors the archipelago’s central group and contains several major ice caps.
Arctic sea ice: Sea water frozen into floating ice across the Arctic Ocean, varying in extent and thickness with the seasons. Seasonal ice governs access to the islands and their surrounding waters.
Great Arctic State Nature Reserve: A Russian protected area established in 1993 across parts of the Arctic coast and islands of Krasnoyarsk Krai. It includes Severnaya Zemlya and protects habitats across the archipelago.

Arctic Ocean Hydrographic Expedition: A Russian expedition led by Boris Vilkitsky that surveyed Arctic waters aboard the icebreakers Taimyr and Vaigach. Its 1913 voyage discovered the archipelago during a survey of the Northern Sea Route.
Bolshevik Island: The southernmost major island of Severnaya Zemlya, separated from October Revolution Island by the Shokalsky Strait. Its position defines the archipelago’s southern edge.
