Seward Peninsula

A large peninsula in western Alaska between the Chukchi Sea and Norton Sound, extending into the Bering Sea. Its Arctic and subarctic landscapes include tundra, mountains, and permafrost.

Bering Strait: A narrow waterway separating Alaska from Russia and connecting the Bering Sea with the Chukchi Sea. The peninsula projects toward this strait, placing it near the maritime boundary between North America and Asia.
Nome, Alaska: A city on the southern coast of the Seward Peninsula in Alaska. Nome is the peninsula’s largest community and its principal regional hub.
Iñupiat: An Indigenous people of northern and western Alaska whose communities include the Seward Peninsula. Iñupiat communities have longstanding ties to the peninsula’s coastal and inland resources.

Inupiaq language: An Inuit language spoken in northern and western Alaska, including communities on the Seward Peninsula. It carries place names and knowledge rooted in the peninsula’s communities.
Permafrost: Ground that remains at or below 0°C for at least two consecutive years. Permafrost constrains construction and shapes drainage across much of the peninsula.
Beringia: The region linking northeastern Asia and northwestern North America during periods of low sea level. The Seward Peninsula is a key surviving landscape of this former region.
