Shade tolerance

Shade tolerance is a plant’s ability to survive and grow under limited light. It reflects adaptations that help plants use scarce light while coping with the costs of slow growth.

Photosynthetic acclimation: Adjustment of photosynthetic machinery to changes in a plant’s light environment. Leaves acclimate their photosynthetic capacity to the low light available in shade.
Photosynthesis: The process by which plants and other organisms convert light energy into chemical energy. Shade tolerance depends on sustaining this energy supply when light is scarce.
Forest understory: The layer of vegetation growing beneath the canopy of a forest. Its plants experience the low and uneven light conditions that select for shade tolerance.
Shade-intolerant plant: A plant that performs poorly under low light and generally requires open or bright conditions to grow well. It contrasts with species able to persist beneath dense vegetation.
Chlorophyll: A group of pigments that absorb light energy for photosynthesis. Shade leaves often adjust pigment content to capture limited light more effectively.
Photosynthetically active radiation: The wavelengths of light, roughly 400–700 nanometers, used by photosynthetic organisms. It defines the usable light whose scarcity creates shade.
Succession: The gradual change in species composition and community structure over time. As forests develop, increasing shade often favors tolerant species over light-demanding ones.
Heliophyte: A plant adapted to grow in bright sunlight and generally performs poorly in deep shade. Its dependence on strong light marks the opposite end of the light-adaptation spectrum.
Specific leaf area: Leaf area per unit of dry mass, a measure of how thin or lightweight leaves are. Thin, high-area leaves can capture more light for each unit of biomass invested.
Light compensation point: The light intensity at which photosynthetic carbon uptake equals respiratory carbon loss. Plants below this threshold cannot maintain a positive carbon balance for long.
