Shade tree

A shade tree is a tree planted or retained to provide shelter from sunlight. Its canopy reduces direct solar exposure beneath and around it.

Urban forestry: The planning and management of trees and forests in and around towns and cities. Shade trees are a central feature of urban tree planting and care.
Tree canopy: The upper layer of leaves and branches formed by a tree or group of trees. The canopy intercepts sunlight and determines the area shaded below.
Deciduous tree: A tree that sheds its leaves seasonally, often in response to winter or dry conditions. Deciduous shade trees can admit more sunlight after their leaves fall.
Thermal comfort: A person’s assessment of whether surrounding thermal conditions feel comfortable. Shade changes radiant heat exposure, a major influence on outdoor comfort.
Live oak: An evergreen oak species native to the southeastern United States and widely planted as an ornamental tree. Its broad, spreading crown makes it a familiar shade tree in warm regions.
Urban heat island: The higher temperatures of built-up areas compared with nearby rural areas. Shade trees reduce solar heating of streets and other urban surfaces.
Leaf area index: The ratio of leaf surface area to the ground area beneath vegetation. It helps describe how much foliage is available to intercept sunlight.
Evergreen tree: A tree that retains foliage throughout the year, replacing leaves gradually or in cycles. Evergreens provide more persistent shade than trees that lose their leaves seasonally.
Building energy consumption: The energy used to operate buildings, including heating, cooling, lighting, and equipment. Well-placed shade can reduce cooling needs while excessive shade may increase lighting use.
American elm: A large deciduous tree native to eastern North America, historically common along streets and in towns. Its vase-shaped crown once created continuous shade over many urban streets.
