Shadow play

Shadow play is a performance in which figures or objects cast shadows onto a screen, often manipulated to tell a story.

Silhouette: A silhouette is the dark outline of a subject seen against a lighter background. Shadow-play figures rely on sharply readable outlines rather than surface detail.
Wayang kulit: Wayang kulit is a Javanese and Balinese theater tradition using flat leather puppets and a backlit screen. It is among the best-known forms of traditional shadow play.
Light source: A light source emits visible radiation that illuminates objects or enables images to be projected. Its position determines where figures cast shadows and how those shadows move.
Wayang beber: Wayang beber is an Indonesian storytelling tradition in which painted scrolls are unrolled during performance. It shares regional storytelling contexts with wayang kulit but presents images without projected shadows.
Shadow puppetry: Shadow puppetry is a form of theater that uses movable figures to cast characters onto a screen. Articulated puppets make controlled gestures and transformations possible.

Occlusion (optics): Occlusion is the blocking of light or sight by an object between a source and an observer. Figures create shadows by obstructing light from reaching the screen.
Puppet film: A puppet film is a motion picture in which puppets serve as animated characters. Filmmakers can adapt shadow-puppet silhouettes and movement for recorded animation.
Projection screen: A projection screen is a surface that displays images formed by transmitted or reflected light. Its material and distance from the light source affect the shadows' sharpness and scale.
Karagöz and Hacivat: Karagöz and Hacivat are comic characters in a Turkish shadow-puppet tradition. Their performances show how shadow play can build stories around recurring comic figures.
