Shah Ismail I

Shah Ismail I founded the Safavid dynasty and ruled Iran from 1501 to 1524. He established Twelver Shiism as the state religion and expanded Safavid rule across much of Iran.

Battle of Chaldiran: The 1514 battle in which Ottoman forces defeated the Safavid army near the border of modern Turkey and Iran. The Ottoman victory halted Ismail’s westward expansion and exposed the Safavid army’s lack of firearms.
Safavid dynasty: An Iranian dynasty that ruled from 1501 to 1736 and made Twelver Shiism the state religion. Ismail transformed the Safavid religious movement into a ruling dynasty.
Shah Tahmasp I: The second Safavid shah, who ruled Iran from 1524 to 1576. Ismail’s son inherited the throne as a child and consolidated the dynasty his father founded.

Murad Beg of the Aq Qoyunlu: An Aq Qoyunlu ruler defeated by Ismail’s forces during the Safavid conquest of Iran. His defeat at Shurur in 1501 opened the way for Ismail to take Tabriz.
Iranian plateau: A highland region of southwestern Asia centered on modern Iran and extending into neighboring countries. Ismail’s campaigns brought much of this region under a single Iranian dynasty.
Aq Qoyunlu: A Turkmen tribal federation that ruled parts of Iran and Anatolia before the Safavids. Ismail’s conquest replaced this rival confederation with a more centralized dynastic state.
