Shahada

The Islamic testimony of faith: “There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God.” It expresses Islam’s central affirmation of divine unity and Muhammad’s prophethood.

Tawhid: The Islamic doctrine that God is one and unique, without partners or equals. The first clause states this central affirmation of divine unity.
Allah: The Arabic name for God, used by Muslims and Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews. The testimony’s Arabic wording names God as Allah.
Adhan: The Islamic call to prayer, recited to announce the times of the five daily prayers. Its wording includes the testimony of faith.
Nicene Creed: A Christian statement of faith formulated at the Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople. It provides a historic Christian creed whose claims about God and Jesus differ from the Shahada.

Trinity: The Christian doctrine that God is one being in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Its account of divine unity differs from the Shahada’s uncompromising Islamic monotheism.
Five Pillars of Islam: Five foundational acts of worship and commitment in Sunni Islam. The Shahada is the first pillar in the customary Sunni list.
Quran: The Islamic scripture, understood by Muslims as revelation from God to Muhammad. The scripture repeatedly affirms the testimony’s themes of divine unity and messengership.
