Shan Hills

The Shan Hills are a mountainous region of eastern Myanmar, centered on the Shan Plateau and extending toward the borders with China, Laos, and Thailand.

Shan Plateau: A high plateau in eastern Myanmar, forming the central upland of the Shan Hills. Its elevated surface is the defining landform within the wider mountain region.
Shan State: A state of Myanmar occupying much of the country’s eastern highlands and named for its Shan population. It contains most of the Shan Hills and is the region’s principal administrative setting.
Shan people: A Tai-speaking ethnic group concentrated in Myanmar’s Shan State and neighboring parts of Southeast Asia. Their name, language, and historical polities are closely associated with the region.
Panglong Agreement: A 1947 agreement between Aung San and representatives of several frontier peoples concerning a future Burmese union. Its promises of autonomy remain central to debates over Shan State’s place in Myanmar.
Inle Lake: A freshwater lake in Myanmar’s Shan State, known for stilt-house villages and floating gardens. It is a distinctive highland landscape and a major center of tourism and local livelihoods.
Salween River: A major river flowing from the Tibetan Plateau through Myanmar to the Andaman Sea. It cuts deep valleys along the western side of much of the Shan upland.
Myanmar: A country in mainland Southeast Asia bordered by Bangladesh, India, China, Laos, and Thailand. The Shan Hills form a major eastern highland region within its national territory.
Tai peoples: A group of peoples speaking related Tai languages across mainland Southeast Asia and southern China. Shan communities belong to the wider Tai-speaking world spanning the region’s borders.
Burma Campaign: The World War II campaign fought in Burma between Allied and Japanese forces from 1942 to 1945. Its eastern operations crossed mountain terrain adjoining the Shan region.
Taunggyi: The capital of Shan State in Myanmar, situated on the Shan Plateau. Its high elevation makes it a regional administrative and commercial center.
