Shan State

Shan State is Myanmar’s largest state, in the country’s east, bordering China, Laos, and Thailand. Its capital is Taunggyi, and its population includes Shan and many other ethnic groups.

Taunggyi: Taunggyi is the capital of Shan State in eastern Myanmar. The state capital sits in the southern Shan Hills and anchors its administration.
Mong Mao: Mong Mao was a historical Tai polity in the region of present-day northern Shan State. It represents early Shan political power in lands now within the state.
Sao Shwe Thaik: Sao Shwe Thaik was a Shan prince and the first president of independent Burma. His political career linked Shan princely authority with the new Burmese republic.
Golden Triangle: The Golden Triangle is a border region where Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand meet, historically associated with opium production. Its Myanmar portion includes areas of eastern Shan State and cross-border economies.

Opium production in Myanmar: Opium production in Myanmar is the cultivation of opium poppy, concentrated in parts of the country’s uplands. Shan State has long been a major cultivation area amid conflict and limited livelihoods.
Myanmar civil war: The Myanmar civil war is the ongoing armed conflict between Myanmar’s military authorities and multiple opposition forces. Its post-2021 escalation has intensified fighting and instability in Shan State.
