Shapur I

Shapur I was the second Sasanian king of kings, ruling from about 240 to 270. He expanded the Persian Empire and captured Roman emperor Valerian in 260.

Battle of Edessa: A battle in 260 in which Sasanian forces defeated a Roman army and captured Emperor Valerian. This victory produced Shapur’s most consequential Roman captive.
Sasanian Empire: A Persian empire ruled by the Sasanian dynasty from the third to seventh centuries. Shapur’s expansion strengthened the empire during its formative period.
