Sharecropping

Sharecropping is a farming arrangement in which a tenant works land owned by another person and pays rent with an agreed share of the crop. It ties land use, labor, and payment to the harvest.

Crop-lien system: A credit system in which merchants advanced supplies to farmers in exchange for a claim on the coming crop. Merchants often financed tenants through crop liens, leaving them indebted before harvest.
Reconstruction era: The period from 1865 to 1877 when the United States rebuilt the South and addressed the aftermath of slavery. Sharecropping spread across the South as emancipation and Reconstruction altered plantation labor.
Debt peonage: A condition in which debt binds a person to labor because repayment is difficult or effectively impossible. Unpaid balances could trap sharecroppers in recurring work for the same landowner or creditor.
Southern United States: The southeastern and south-central region of the United States, with a distinct history shaped by plantation agriculture and slavery. The region became the best-known setting for sharecropping after the Civil War.
Tenant farming: An agricultural system in which farmers rent land from owners and pay cash, crops, or labor for its use. Sharecropping is a tenant-farming arrangement whose rent is paid in crops.
Emancipation Proclamation: An 1863 order by Abraham Lincoln declaring enslaved people free in designated areas rebelling against the United States. Emancipation changed the labor system that Southern landowners sought to replace with crop-sharing contracts.
Convict leasing: A system in which governments leased imprisoned people to private employers for labor, especially in the postwar American South. It was a distinct coercive labor system that operated alongside sharecropping after emancipation.
Mississippi Delta: A fertile alluvial region in northwestern Mississippi and adjacent states, shaped by the Mississippi River. Cotton cultivation and concentrated landownership made sharecropping central to the Delta's rural economy.
Metayage: A land-tenure system in which a tenant gives the landowner a customary share of the harvest. This older European arrangement provides a close comparison for crop-sharing tenancy.
Freedmen's Bureau: A federal agency established in 1865 to assist formerly enslaved people and war refugees in the postwar South. The bureau mediated labor contracts and confronted disputes affecting freedpeople entering tenancy.
