Sharpening

Sharpening restores a cutting edge by removing or reshaping material at the blade’s edge, forming a geometry that can cut effectively.

Abrasive: A material that removes or wears away another material through friction. Sharpening uses abrasive grains to remove steel and reshape the edge.
Cutting edge: The narrow meeting point of surfaces that enables a tool to cut material. Sharpening reshapes this part of the blade into a usable edge.
Whetstone: A stone used with water or oil to abrade and sharpen tools. Whetstones offer controlled material removal for sharpening knives and other blades.
Stropping: The finishing of an edge by drawing it across a soft surface, often leather, sometimes with abrasive compound. Stropping refines an already formed edge rather than generally reshaping it.
Abrasive grain size: A measure of the size of particles in an abrasive, often expressed as grit rating. Grain size affects how quickly sharpening removes metal and how coarse the resulting edge is.
Bevel: An angled surface cut or ground along the edge of a blade. The bevel is the surface sharpeners abrade to form the cutting edge.
Bench grinder: A powered tool with rotating abrasive wheels mounted on a workbench. Its rapid grinding can reshape edges quickly but requires heat and angle control.
Grinding: A machining process that removes material through contact with an abrasive wheel or surface. Grinding can perform sharpening, but also removes material for purposes beyond edge restoration.
Edge angle: The angle formed by a blade’s bevel at its cutting edge. The angle determines the edge’s geometry, cutting behavior, and resistance to damage.
Steel: An iron-based alloy containing carbon, often with other elements that alter its properties. Blade steel’s hardness and structure affect sharpening behavior and edge durability.
