Shear stress

Shear stress is force per unit area acting parallel to a surface. It tends to make adjacent layers of a material slide past one another.

Shear strain: The deformation produced when adjacent material layers shift parallel to one another. It measures the resulting distortion when shear stress acts.
Stress (mechanics): Internal force per unit area within a material, represented by a tensor. Shear stress is one component of the general stress state.
Fluid mechanics: The study of fluids at rest and in motion. Shear stress helps determine velocity profiles and forces within flowing fluids.
Hydrostatic pressure: Pressure that acts equally in all directions at a point in a static fluid. It is isotropic and compressive, unlike directional shear stress.
Shear modulus: A material property measuring the ratio of shear stress to shear strain in the elastic regime. It describes how strongly a material resists the deformation caused by shear stress.
Normal stress: Stress acting perpendicular to a surface, tending to compress or extend a material. Its direction distinguishes it from shear stress, which acts parallel to the surface.
Boundary layer: A thin region near a surface where fluid velocity changes sharply due to viscosity. Strong velocity gradients there generate wall shear stress.
Principal stress: A normal stress acting on a plane where the shear stress is zero. Principal stresses describe orientations that eliminate shear on the chosen plane.
Newtonian fluid: A fluid whose shear stress is proportional to its velocity gradient, with viscosity as the proportionality constant. In such fluids, shear stress rises predictably with the rate of layer-to-layer sliding.
Traction (mechanics): The force per unit area acting on a specified internal or external surface. Shear stress is the tangential component of traction on a surface.
