Sheet metal
Sheet metal is metal formed into thin, flat sheets, usually by rolling. It is shaped into parts and structures through cutting, bending, and joining.
Rolling (metalworking): A metalworking process that reduces thickness or changes a workpiece's cross-section by passing it between rollers. Rolling produces sheet from thicker metal by compressing it between rolls.
Steel: An iron-based alloy whose carbon content and other additions determine its properties. Steel is a common, strong, and economical sheet-metal material.
Automotive body: The exterior panels and supporting structure that enclose and protect a motor vehicle. Pressed sheet panels give vehicle bodies shape while balancing mass, strength, and cost.
Plate (metal): A relatively thick, flat metal product, distinguished from sheet by thickness conventions that vary among standards and industries. Plate and sheet are both flat products, but thickness separates their typical fabrication uses.
Shearing (manufacturing): A cutting process that separates material by applying opposing forces along a line. Shearing cuts sheet stock into blanks without producing chips.
Aluminum alloy: A metallic material made primarily of aluminum with additions that alter its strength and other properties. Aluminum sheet offers low mass and corrosion resistance in many applications.
Metal roofing: A roof covering made from metal panels or shingles. Roof panels use formed sheet to shed water across large building surfaces.
Metal foil: A very thin metal sheet, often produced by rolling and used in packaging, insulation, or electrical applications. Foil is thinner and more flexible than the sheet stock used for structural parts.
Bending (metalworking): A forming process that permanently changes a material's shape by applying force around an axis. Bending creates flanges and angles while usually leaving sheet thickness nearly unchanged.
Copper: A reddish metal known for high electrical and thermal conductivity and good formability. Copper sheet is selected for conductivity, roofing, and architectural finishes.
