Shell plc

Shell plc is a British multinational energy company headquartered in London. It produces and sells oil, natural gas, chemicals, and energy, including electricity and lower-carbon products.

Petroleum industry: The global industry that explores for, extracts, refines, transports, and sells petroleum. Shell’s oil and gas operations run across nearly every stage of this industry.
Royal Dutch Shell: The former multinational energy group created by the 1907 merger of Royal Dutch Petroleum and Shell Transport and Trading. Shell plc inherited the businesses and history of this predecessor group.
Wael Sawan: A Lebanese-Canadian executive who became chief executive officer of Shell in 2023. He leads Shell’s current strategy and decisions on energy investment.
BP: A British multinational energy company active in oil, natural gas, and energy transition businesses. BP is Shell’s closest UK-based integrated oil and gas competitor.
Liquefied natural gas: Natural gas cooled into liquid form for storage and transport by ship. Shell is a major producer and trader of LNG across international markets.
Shell Transport and Trading Company: A British company founded in 1897 that traded in shells and later transported oil. Its British trading business became one half of the 1907 Royal Dutch Shell combination.
Ben van Beurden: A Dutch engineer and executive who served as Shell’s chief executive from 2014 to 2022. His tenure included the BG Group acquisition and the transition to Shell plc.
ExxonMobil: An American multinational energy company formed in 1999 through the merger of Exxon and Mobil. Its scale and integrated business provide a leading US comparison to Shell.
Oil refinery: An industrial facility that separates crude oil into fuels and other petroleum products. Refining turns crude oil from Shell’s upstream business into fuels and feedstocks.
Royal Dutch Petroleum Company: A Dutch oil company founded in 1890 to develop petroleum resources in the Dutch East Indies. It supplied the other corporate lineage behind Royal Dutch Shell.
