Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey is an American contemporary artist and graphic designer known for the OBEY street-art campaign and the Barack Obama “Hope” poster.

OBEY Giant: A street-art image of wrestler André the Giant that became the emblem of Shepard Fairey’s OBEY campaign. Fairey began the campaign with this image, wheat-pasting it in public spaces in 1989.
Screen printing: A printing process that transfers ink through a mesh stencil onto a surface. Fairey has used its bold colors and repeatability to produce posters and prints.
Providence, Rhode Island: A city in the northeastern United States and the capital of Rhode Island. Fairey attended the Rhode Island School of Design and began his sticker campaign there.
Copyright infringement: The unauthorized use of material protected by copyright. The Hope poster dispute centered on Fairey’s use of an Associated Press photograph.
Hope (Obama poster): A 2008 portrait of Barack Obama by Shepard Fairey, rendered in red, beige, and blue with the word “HOPE.” This campaign image brought Fairey’s graphic style to a global political audience.
Wheatpaste: A paste made from flour or starch and water, commonly used to attach paper posters to surfaces. It allows Fairey’s paper images to be installed quickly on street walls.
Rhode Island School of Design: An art and design college in Providence, founded in 1877. Fairey studied illustration there while developing the OBEY project.
Associated Press: A nonprofit news cooperative that supplies reporting, photographs, and other content to media organizations. The news cooperative sued Fairey over the source photograph used for the Hope poster.
Andre the Giant Has a Posse: A 1989 sticker campaign by Shepard Fairey featuring wrestler André the Giant and the phrase “Andre the Giant Has a Posse.” It was the original form of the project that developed into OBEY.
Stencil graffiti: Graffiti made by applying paint through cut-out stencils. Stencil-like shapes give his portraits crisp edges suited to reproduction.
