Shift work

Shift work is an arrangement in which employees work scheduled periods at different times of day, often including evenings, nights, or rotating hours.

Circadian rhythm: An internal biological cycle that repeats roughly every 24 hours and coordinates processes such as sleep and hormone release. Work hours outside daylight can conflict with the body's daily timing system.
Shift work sleep disorder: A circadian rhythm sleep disorder involving insomnia or excessive sleepiness linked to work hours overlapping usual sleep time. It describes a clinical pattern of sleep problems associated with shift schedules.
Healthcare workforce: The professionals and support staff who provide health services. Hospitals schedule clinical teams around continuous patient-care needs.
Standard working hours: A conventional daytime work schedule, commonly organized around weekday business hours. It provides the daytime baseline that shift schedules depart from.
Chronobiology: The study of biological rhythms and their timing in living organisms. It provides the framework for investigating adaptation to unusual work hours.
Chronotype: An individual's characteristic timing preference for sleep and activity across the day. Early and late chronotypes can experience the same shift schedule differently.

Emergency services: Organizations that respond to urgent threats to life, health, or property. Police, fire, and ambulance services need staffing at all hours.
Flexible working: Work arrangements that allow variation in when, where, or how employees work. Flexibility can alter work timing without requiring assigned shifts.
Light therapy: Treatment using controlled exposure to bright light to influence biological timing or mood. Researchers study timed light exposure as a way to shift circadian timing for night workers.
