Shikoku

Shikoku is the smallest of Japan’s four main islands, lying south of western Honshu. It comprises four prefectures and is separated from Honshu by the Seto Inland Sea.

Seto Inland Sea: A sea in western Japan between Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. It separates Shikoku from Honshu and connects the island’s northern coast to western Japan.
Shikoku Pilgrimage: A Buddhist pilgrimage route linking 88 temples associated with Kūkai across Shikoku. Its circuit gives the island a distinctive religious and walking tradition.
Mount Ishizuchi: A mountain in Ehime Prefecture and the highest peak in western Japan. It anchors Shikoku’s mountainous interior and draws hikers and pilgrims.
Hokkaido: The northernmost and second-largest of Japan’s four main islands. Its northern position and much greater area contrast with Shikoku’s southern setting and small size.
Ehime Prefecture: A prefecture in northwestern Shikoku, with Matsuyama as its capital. It is one of the four prefectures that make up the island.
Great Seto Bridge: A system of bridges connecting Okayama Prefecture on Honshu with Kagawa Prefecture on Shikoku. It provides a major road and rail crossing between the island and Honshu.
Naruto Whirlpools: Tidal whirlpools in the Naruto Strait between Tokushima Prefecture and Awaji Island. They are among the island’s best-known coastal natural phenomena.
Kyushu: The southwesternmost of Japan’s four main islands. Kyushu is larger and lies southwest of Shikoku, across the Bungo Channel.
Kagawa Prefecture: A prefecture on northeastern Shikoku, with Takamatsu as its capital. It occupies Shikoku’s smallest and most northerly prefectural area.
Shimanami Kaido: A road and cycling route across bridges and islands between Hiroshima Prefecture and Ehime Prefecture. It links Shikoku to Honshu through the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
