Shingon Buddhism

Shingon is a Japanese school of Vajrayana Buddhism centered on esoteric teachings attributed to Mahavairocana. Its practices include mantra, mandala, mudra, and ritual initiation.

Mahavairocana Tantra: A foundational Buddhist tantra presenting Mahavairocana’s teachings and ritual practices. Shingon draws its central doctrines and rituals from this scripture.
Kūkai: A Japanese Buddhist monk and scholar who founded Shingon as an organized school. Kūkai established Shingon’s teachings and institutions after studying in Tang China.
Vajrayana: A form of Buddhism using esoteric rituals, mantras, visualizations, and initiations as paths to awakening. Shingon is the major Japanese school within this broader Buddhist tradition.
Tendai: A Japanese Buddhist school founded by Saichō, combining several practices and teachings centered on the Lotus Sutra. Tendai also developed esoteric practices but follows a different institutional lineage and doctrinal framework.
Goma: A Buddhist fire ritual in which offerings are made into a consecrated flame. Shingon priests perform goma rites for purification, protection, and the fulfillment of vows.
Mantra: A sacred syllable, word, or phrase used in religious recitation and ritual. Shingon uses mantras as a means of embodying Buddhist teachings and awakening.
Tang dynasty: A Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 618 to 907 and fostered major religious and cultural exchange. Kūkai encountered esoteric Buddhist teachings in Tang China.
Mahavairocana: A cosmic Buddha central to esoteric Buddhism and identified with the universal principle of awakening. Shingon treats Mahavairocana as the source and embodiment of its esoteric teachings.
Jōdo Shinshū: A Japanese Pure Land school centered on reliance on Amida Buddha and recitation of his name. Its emphasis on devotion to Amida contrasts with Shingon’s initiatory ritual path.
Toji: A Buddhist temple in Kyoto historically associated with Kūkai and Shingon Buddhism. Tōji became a major center for Shingon teaching and ritual in the capital.
