Shinsengumi

The Shinsengumi was a samurai force that policed Kyoto for the Tokugawa shogunate during the final years of the Edo period. It became known for strict discipline and its role in the conflict that ended shogunate rule.

Kyoto: A historic Japanese city that served as the imperial capital for more than a thousand years. The Shinsengumi operated as a political police force in this contested imperial capital.
Kondō Isami: A swordsman from Tama who commanded the Shinsengumi during its most prominent years. His leadership linked the group’s humble origins to its shogunate service.
Sonnō jōi: A political slogan meaning “revere the emperor, expel the barbarians,” influential in late-Edo opposition to the shogunate. Its supporters’ activity in Kyoto formed the unrest the Shinsengumi was tasked with suppressing.
Boshin War: A civil war fought in Japan from 1868 to 1869 between imperial forces and supporters of the Tokugawa shogunate. The war turned the Shinsengumi’s policing role into a final military struggle for the shogunate.
Tokugawa shogunate: A military government that ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868 under the Tokugawa family. The Shinsengumi enforced the shogunate’s authority in Kyoto.
Hijikata Toshizō: A Shinsengumi vice-commander who became a leading Tokugawa loyalist during the Boshin War. He enforced discipline and continued the struggle after the group’s Kyoto operations ended.
Bakumatsu: The final years of the Tokugawa shogunate, marked by political upheaval and the end of Japan’s isolation. The Shinsengumi’s formation and service belong to this period of regime crisis.
Battle of Toba–Fushimi: A January 1868 battle near Kyoto that began the Boshin War and ended in victory for imperial forces. Its outcome forced the Shinsengumi and other Tokugawa forces into retreat.
Rōshigumi: A group of masterless samurai recruited in 1863 to protect the Tokugawa shogun during a visit to Kyoto. The Shinsengumi emerged from the faction of this group that remained in Kyoto.
Okita Sōji: A Shinsengumi captain renowned in later accounts for his swordsmanship and early death from illness. His role in the force and subsequent legend exemplify the gap between history and popular memory.
