Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Chisholm was an American politician and educator who became the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress, in 1968. She represented New York’s 12th congressional district and sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972.

Barbara Lee: Barbara Lee is a U.S. representative from California and the first Black woman to represent that state in Congress. Lee later represented Chisholm’s former district and carried forward her legacy in Congress.
Brooklyn: Brooklyn is a borough of New York City, situated on the western end of Long Island. Chisholm grew up in Brooklyn and built her political career there.
1972 Democratic Party presidential primaries: The 1972 Democratic presidential primaries selected delegates for the party’s national nominating convention. Chisholm ran in these primaries, becoming the first Black candidate to seek a major party’s presidential nomination.

Women in the United States House of Representatives: Women in the United States House of Representatives are members elected to the lower chamber of Congress. Chisholm’s 1968 victory broke a barrier as the first Black woman elected to the House.
Gloria Steinem: Gloria Steinem is an American journalist and feminist organizer who helped build the modern women’s movement. Steinem joined Chisholm and others in organizing women for greater political representation.
Brooklyn College: Brooklyn College is a public college of the City University of New York, founded in 1930. Chisholm earned her bachelor’s degree there before beginning her career in education.
