Shō Hashi

Shō Hashi was a 15th-century Okinawan ruler who brought the island’s competing kingdoms under his authority and founded the Ryukyu Kingdom.

Sanzan period: A period in Okinawan history when the island was divided among the rival kingdoms of Hokuzan, Chūzan, and Nanzan. Shō Hashi’s consolidation ended this three-kingdom order.
Ryukyu Kingdom: A kingdom that ruled the Ryukyu Islands from the 15th century until its annexation by Japan in 1879. It was the unified polity Shō Hashi established.
Ryukyu trade: The maritime commerce connecting the Ryukyu Kingdom with China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. The unified kingdom could organize and benefit from these regional exchanges.
Chūzan Seikan: A Japanese-language history of the Ryukyu Kingdom compiled by the scholar Sai Taku in the 17th century. Its account helped shape later narratives of Shō Hashi and the kingdom’s origins.
Chūzan: One of the three Okinawan kingdoms during the Sanzan period, centered on central Okinawa. Shō Hashi first ruled Chūzan before extending his authority across the island.
Chūzan Seifu: A historical chronicle of the rulers of Chūzan and early Ryukyu, compiled in the 17th century. It preserves a later account of Shō Hashi’s rise and the kingdom’s founding.
Shuri Castle: A royal castle in Okinawa that served as the political center of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It became the seat of the dynasty and state Shō Hashi founded.
Sai Taku: A Ryukyuan scholar and official who compiled historical works, including Chūzan Seikan. His chronicle transmitted a later court perspective on Shō Hashi’s reign.
Hokuzan: The northern Okinawan kingdom during the Sanzan period, centered on the Motobu Peninsula. Its defeat by Chūzan was a major step in Shō Hashi’s unification.
Ming dynasty: The Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 1368 to 1644. Shō Hashi’s court sought Ming recognition and participated in its tributary system.
