Shō Tai

Shō Tai was the last king of the Ryukyu Kingdom, reigning from 1848 until Japan formally annexed the kingdom in 1879. His reign spanned the kingdom’s transition into Japanese rule.

Shō Dynasty: The royal dynasty that ruled the Ryukyu Kingdom from the fifteenth century until its annexation by Japan. Shō Tai inherited the throne as the dynasty’s final reigning king.
Ryukyu Disposition: The Japanese government’s 1879 abolition of the Ryukyu Kingdom and establishment of Okinawa Prefecture. This act ended Shō Tai’s reign and formally incorporated the islands into Japan.
Shō Juntoku: A Ryukyuan royal who served as crown prince during the final years of the kingdom. As Shō Tai’s son and heir, he embodied the dynasty’s future at its end.
Okinawa Prefecture: A prefecture of Japan formed in 1879 from the territory of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It replaced the kingdom Shō Tai had ruled.
Shō Iku: The Ryukyu king who ruled from 1835 to 1847, immediately before Shō Tai. Shō Iku was Shō Tai’s father and predecessor.
Ryukyu Domain: A Japanese domain established in 1872 to govern the former Ryukyu Kingdom while its royal court remained in place. Its creation reduced the kingdom’s autonomy during Shō Tai’s reign.
Shō Ten: A son of Shō Tai who became the head of the former Ryukyuan royal family after his father’s death. His later position carried the royal lineage into the post-kingdom era.
Tokyo: The capital of Japan and the seat of its central government. After annexation, Shō Tai was compelled to leave Shuri and live in Tokyo.
Shō En: The founder of the Second Shō Dynasty, which ruled the Ryukyu Kingdom until 1879. His dynasty supplied the royal line into which Shō Tai was born.
Meiji Restoration: The political transformation beginning in 1868 that restored imperial rule and centralized government in Japan. The new Japanese state pursued the centralization that brought Ryukyu under direct control.
