Shoot apical meristem

A region of dividing, undifferentiated plant cells at a shoot tip that produces the stem, leaves, and other above-ground organs.

Tunica–corpus organization: A layered arrangement of shoot apical meristem cells, with outer tunica layers and an inner corpus. This cell-layer structure helps explain how the meristem grows while preserving its surface.
Plant stem cell: An undifferentiated plant cell capable of self-renewal and producing differentiated descendants. The meristem's persistent growth depends on a population of self-renewing stem cells.
Axillary meristem: A meristem in a leaf axil that can produce a branch or flower-bearing shoot. Unlike the shoot-tip meristem, it initiates lateral shoots from leaf axils.
Embryogenesis: The formation and early development of an embryo from a fertilized egg. The shoot apical meristem is established during plant embryogenesis.
Root apical meristem: A meristem at a root tip that produces primary root tissues and drives root elongation. It is the root-tip counterpart, producing below-ground tissues rather than shoots.
Central zone: The slowly dividing region near the center of a shoot apical meristem that maintains stem cells. Its stem cells replenish the meristem as peripheral regions form organs.
Meristem: A plant tissue region whose actively dividing cells generate new tissues and organs. The shoot apical meristem is one specialized member of this broader class of growth regions.
Branching (plants): The formation of lateral shoots from a plant's main axis. Shoot meristems determine the growth of main and lateral axes.
Shoot apical meristem formation: The developmental process that establishes a shoot apical meristem in a plant embryo. This process creates the growth center that later produces the shoot system.
Vascular cambium: A lateral meristem that produces secondary xylem and phloem, increasing stem and root girth. It drives thickening, unlike the shoot apical meristem's production of primary shoot organs.
