Shukri al-Quwatli

Shukri al-Quwatli was a Syrian statesman and president who led Syria from 1943 to 1949 and from 1955 to 1958, including during its union with Egypt.

Syrian nationalism: A political movement advocating a distinct Syrian national identity and self-government. Quwatli emerged from the movement opposing Ottoman and French rule in Syria.
Syrian Constitution of 1950: The constitution that established Syria as a parliamentary republic after the 1949 military coups. It defined the institutions under which Quwatli returned to the presidency in 1955.
Syrian independence: The end of French mandatory authority and establishment of Syria as an independent state in 1946. Quwatli’s government completed the withdrawal of French forces during his first presidency.
