Shunryū Suzuki

Shunryū Suzuki (1904–1971) was a Japanese Sōtō Zen monk who established the San Francisco Zen Center and helped introduce sustained Zen practice in the United States.

Suzuki Roshi: A Japanese honorific meaning “teacher Suzuki,” commonly used for Shunryū Suzuki. The title by which students and later generations most often remember him.
Sōtō Zen: A Japanese school of Zen Buddhism centered on seated meditation and the practice of awakening in ordinary activity. It was Suzuki’s tradition and the lineage he taught in the United States.
San Francisco Zen Center: A Sōtō Zen Buddhist organization founded by Shunryū Suzuki in San Francisco in 1962. It was the principal institution Suzuki established for Zen practice in the United States.
Sōji-ji: One of the two head temples of Japanese Sōtō Zen Buddhism, located in Yokohama. Suzuki received training in the institutional tradition whose practice he later taught abroad.
American Zen: Zen Buddhism as practiced and institutionally developed in the United States. Suzuki became one of the formative teachers in its postwar development.
Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki: A Japanese scholar whose English-language writings helped popularize Zen Buddhism in the West. He shared Suzuki’s surname and Western audience but was a scholar, not the San Francisco Zen Center’s founder.
Zazen: Seated meditation practiced in Zen Buddhism, commonly performed in a stable upright posture. Suzuki taught it as the central practice of Zen, not merely a technique for achieving a result.
Tassajara Zen Mountain Center: A Zen monastery in California founded by the San Francisco Zen Center in 1967. Suzuki helped establish it as a residential training monastery for American students.
Kōshō-ji: A Sōtō Zen temple in Japan where Shunryū Suzuki served as a young priest. His early temple service preceded his appointment to San Francisco.
Zen Center sex scandal: A controversy over teacher-student relationships and leadership at the San Francisco Zen Center in the 1980s. It exposed tensions around authority in the institution Suzuki founded, after his death.
