Siad Barre

Siad Barre was a Somali military officer who ruled Somalia from 1969 until his government fell in 1991. His rule combined military socialism, authoritarian control, and shifting Cold War alliances.

1969 Somali coup d'état: A military coup that overthrew Somalia’s civilian government on 21 October 1969. Barre seized power in this coup, days after President Abdirashid Ali Shermarke was assassinated.
