Sian Kaʼan Biosphere Reserve

A UNESCO biosphere reserve on Mexico’s Caribbean coast in Quintana Roo, protecting tropical forests, wetlands, mangroves, and coral reefs.

Biosphere reserve: A UNESCO designation for places that combine biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, and research. Sian Kaʼan is part of UNESCO’s international network of these conservation areas.

Sustainable tourism: Tourism managed to reduce environmental harm and support local communities over time. Tourism in the reserve depends on protecting the ecosystems that attract visitors.
West Indian manatee: A large aquatic mammal found in warm coastal and river waters of the Caribbean and nearby regions. The reserve’s lagoons and channels offer habitat for this vulnerable herbivore.
Yucatán Peninsula: A limestone peninsula in southeastern Mexico and parts of Belize and Guatemala. Sian Kaʼan occupies the peninsula’s Caribbean-facing coast.
Coral reef: A marine ecosystem built by reef-forming corals and their calcium-carbonate skeletons. Reefs along the reserve’s coast shelter diverse marine species and buffer waves.
