Khanate of Sibir

The Khanate of Sibir was a Tatar state in western Siberia that emerged in the fifteenth century and was conquered by Russia in the late sixteenth century.

Golden Horde: A Mongol successor state that ruled much of eastern Europe and western Siberia from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. The khanate emerged amid the Golden Horde’s fragmentation and the rise of successor polities.
Küçüm Khan: A ruler of the Khanate of Sibir who resisted Russian expansion in the late sixteenth century. His reign became the central episode in the khanate’s conflict with Russia.
Qashliq: A settlement near modern Tobolsk that served as the capital of the Khanate of Sibir. Its capture by Yermak’s forces struck at the khanate’s political center.
Russian conquest of Siberia: The expansion of Russian power across Siberia from the late sixteenth century onward. The khanate’s defeat marked an early turning point in this eastward expansion.
Tyumen Khanate: A Tatar polity in western Siberia that preceded the Khanate of Sibir. Its rulers and territory formed part of the political setting from which Sibir emerged.

Chinggisid: A descendant of Genghis Khan, whose lineage supplied many rulers of Mongol successor states. Chinggisid descent helped establish dynastic legitimacy among Siberian Tatar rulers.
Ivan the Terrible: Tsar of Russia from 1547 to 1584, during whose reign Russian expansion into Siberia began. His government authorized and supported the Stroganov-backed Cossack campaign.
