Sichuan

Sichuan is a province in southwestern China, centered on the Sichuan Basin. Historically known as Shu, it is associated with Li Bai’s early life and a distinctive regional culture.

Sanxingdui: An archaeological site in Sichuan containing artifacts from a Bronze Age culture of ancient Shu. Its discoveries reveal a striking early civilization in the region later called Sichuan.
Sichuan Basin: A lowland basin in southwestern China surrounded by mountains and highlands. The basin is the province’s geographic core and helps explain its dense population.
Li Bai: A Tang dynasty poet celebrated for imaginative, lyrical verse and an expansive literary voice. Tradition associates his early life with Sichuan before his travels across China.
Chengdu: The capital and largest city of Sichuan Province. Chengdu is the province’s political, economic, and cultural center.
Chongqing: A municipality in southwestern China that was part of Sichuan Province until 1997. Its separation changed Sichuan’s eastern boundary and distinguishes two closely linked regional identities.
Shu Kingdom: An ancient state centered in the Sichuan Basin, prominent during the Three Kingdoms period. The name preserves Sichuan’s historical identity as Shu.
Sichuanese Mandarin: A group of Mandarin varieties spoken across much of Sichuan and neighboring areas. Its sound and vocabulary reflect the region’s linguistic history.
Liu Bei: A warlord who founded the Shu Han state during the Three Kingdoms period. His regime made Sichuan the center of one of China’s best-known historical kingdoms.
Dujiangyan Irrigation System: An ancient water-control and irrigation project built on the Min River in Sichuan. It continues to illustrate how water management supported agriculture in the basin.
Yunnan: A mountainous province in southwestern China bordering Sichuan to the south. Its highland geography and ethnic diversity contrast with Sichuan’s basin-centered character.
