Athens’ failed military campaign to conquer Syracuse and extend its influence in Sicily during the Peloponnesian War, fought from 415 to 413 BCE.
Siege of Syracuse: The Athenian attempt to encircle and capture Syracuse during the Sicilian Expedition. The campaign’s central land operation stalled as Syracusan defenses and reinforcements disrupted Athenian siege works.
Segesta: An ancient Elymian city in western Sicily that sought Athenian support against Selinus. Segesta’s appeal and claims of wealth helped persuade Athens to send an expedition.
Lamachus: An Athenian general who commanded the Sicilian expedition alongside Nicias and Alcibiades. He favored prompt action against Syracuse, a strategy abandoned after his death.

Alcibiades: An Athenian statesman and general who advocated the Sicilian campaign and commanded its initial phase. He argued that intervention could bring allies and resources under Athenian influence.
Demosthenes: An Athenian general sent with reinforcements to the Sicilian Expedition in 413 BCE. He recognized that the siege had failed and urged withdrawal, but his proposal was rejected.
Spartan occupation of Decelea: The Spartan occupation of Decelea in Attica, begun in 413 BCE and maintained through the war. Sparta established this base as the Sicilian defeat became known, intensifying pressure on Athens.
Syracusan navy: The fleet of Syracuse, which fought Athens for control of the harbor and surrounding waters. Syracusan ships eventually trapped and defeated the Athenian fleet in the harbor.
Nicias: An Athenian general and politician who opposed the Sicilian campaign but later commanded it. His warnings about the expedition’s scale proved prescient, though he ultimately led the reinforcement.
