Siege of Acre (1189–1191)

A prolonged siege during the Third Crusade in which Crusader forces captured the port city of Acre from the Ayyubids in 1191.

Acre: A historic port city on the eastern Mediterranean coast, now in northern Israel. Its harbor made the city a strategic supply gateway and the siege’s central prize.
Battle of Hattin: A 1187 battle in which Saladin’s forces destroyed much of the Kingdom of Jerusalem’s field army. Its outcome left Acre vulnerable and helped trigger Guy’s attempt to regain the initiative.
Richard I of England: King of England from 1189 to 1199 and a leading commander of the Third Crusade. He arrived during the siege and directed the final campaign against Acre.
Massacre at Acre: The execution of thousands of Muslim prisoners by Richard I’s forces in 1191. The prisoners’ killing followed the city’s surrender and intensified hostility between the armies.
Guy of Lusignan: A French noble who ruled the Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1186 to 1192. He began the siege in 1189 while seeking to recover his kingdom’s lost territory.
Kingdom of Jerusalem: A Crusader state established in the Levant after the First Crusade. Acre’s loss threatened the kingdom’s remaining coastal strongholds and political survival.

Saladin: The Muslim ruler who founded the Ayyubid dynasty and led campaigns against Crusader states. His forces held Acre and repeatedly tried to break the besieging army.
Third Crusade: A campaign by European rulers to recover Jerusalem after Saladin captured it in 1187. The siege became the crusade’s first major operation in the eastern Mediterranean.
