Siege of Candia

The 1648–1669 Ottoman siege of Candia, Crete, ended Venetian rule on the island after one of the longest sieges in European history.

Candia: A fortified city on Crete, now called Heraklion, that served as the island’s Venetian capital. The city’s bastions and defenses made its capture a decades-long undertaking.
Cretan War: The 1645–1669 war between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice over Crete and nearby territories. The siege was the war’s climactic campaign and lasted through most of its final two decades.
Francesco Morosini: A Venetian military commander and later doge who led the defense of Candia and negotiated its surrender in 1669. Morosini commanded the Venetian defense during the siege’s final phase and secured terms for withdrawal.
Treaty of Candia: The 1669 agreement that ended the Cretan War and transferred Candia to Ottoman control. Its terms formalized the surrender after the long siege and preserved limited Venetian footholds nearby.
