Siege of Jerusalem (1099)

The First Crusade’s siege and capture of Jerusalem in July 1099, followed by the killing of many inhabitants. The victory established Christian rule in the city.

First Crusade: A military expedition launched by Western European Christians that captured Jerusalem in 1099. Its surviving forces reached Jerusalem after campaigning across the eastern Mediterranean.
Pope Urban II: The pope who called for an armed expedition to aid Eastern Christians and recover holy places in 1095. His appeal at Clermont helped launch the expedition that culminated in the siege.
Siege of Jerusalem (1187): Saladin’s siege and recapture of Jerusalem from the Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1187. Its negotiated surrender sharply contrasts with the killings reported after the 1099 capture.
