Siege of Khartoum

The 1884–1885 siege in which Mahdist forces captured Khartoum from Egyptian and British defenders, ending with the city’s fall and Charles Gordon’s death.

Khartoum: The Sudanese city at the confluence of the Blue Nile and White Nile. Its location made it a strategic river junction and the besieged defenders’ stronghold.
Charles George Gordon: A British army officer and colonial administrator who commanded Khartoum’s defense during the siege. His leadership and death made the city’s fall a major British political crisis.
